Jordan-Egypt to Hold International Conference to Support UNRWA

Amman, MINA – Jordan and Egypt ready to hold an international conference to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for helping Palestinian Refugees.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmad Abul Gheit, revealed to Arab foreign ministers during a press conference at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Wednesday, reported by Ma’an News Agency. 

“We were informed that Jordan and Egypt had called for an international conference with a legal and political framework to discuss the UNRWA crisis.” He explained.

He also said, “Our support for UNRWA is to provide essential services for Palestinian refugees”.

The effect of UNRWA financial crisis which is currently facing a budget deficit of more than $200 million, “it is to pressure the Palestinians and force them to accept what is not acceptable.”

He stressed, “the ministers agreed to continue discussing this UN agency’s financial crisis, given the results of an international conference called by Jordan to coordinate with Egypt and Palestine, as well as cooperate with Japan, which will co-sponsor the conference, including Sweden, Germany, Turkey, and the European Union. ”

The international conference aims to gather financial and political support for UNRWA.

The conference is planned to be held on the sidelines of a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, however, specific dates have not been set.

The international conference is a continuation of Jordan’s efforts to communicate with Arab countries to gather support for UNRWA in order to continue with its services to Palestinian refugees.

The UNRWA financial crisis came about as a result of the United States (US) Trump administration’s decision to end all funding assistance after more than seven decades of the US being the largest donor with around $360 million a year. (T/Sj/RS5)
