US Didn’t Receive an Extradition Request from Turkey over Gulen – White House

Washington, 14 Syawal 1437/19 July 2016 (MINA) – The US has not received “a specific extradition request from the Turkish government” concerning Fethullah Gulen, the White House said Monday.

In his daily briefing, spokesperson Josh Earnest said “If and when we receive a request, we will evaluate that request based on the Extradition Treaty that was signed by the United States and Turkey more than 30 years ago.”

The request would be evaluated to determine whether or not it was related to crimes that are covered by the Extradition Treaty, added Earnest and then would be an evaluation made jointly by US Department of State and Justice before extraditing Gulen.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed Gulen for the attempted coup and demanded from the US to extradite him last Saturday.

Gulen denied such accusations in multiple press conferences in the US where he resides and condemned the use of military power to implement democracy. (T/R07/R01)
