New York, MINA – The United Nations General Assembly has officially adopted a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, held on Tuesday.
The resolution was approved by a majority of UN members, but the United States and Indonesia were among 51 countries that abstained from the vote during the 11th Emergency Special Session, Anadolu reported.
The resolution, titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine,” received 107 votes in favor from the 193 member states, while 12 countries including Russia, Belarus, and Iran voted against it.
The document calls for an “immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire” as well as a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

The resolution text also reaffirms support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
Additionally, the UN General Assembly called for the complete exchange of prisoners of war and the release and return of forcibly displaced civilians as initial steps to build trust between the conflicting parties.
The abstention positions taken by the US and Indonesia drew attention. The US delegation explained that some expressions in the resolution, including the affirmation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, could “divert focus” from the diplomatic path Washington is promoting to resolve the conflict.
US Deputy Representative to the UN, Tammy Bruce, emphasized the importance of maintaining flexibility in international diplomacy without neglecting the emphasis on negotiations.

Meanwhile, the reasons behind Indonesia’s abstention decision have not yet received an official explanation from the Indonesian representation at the UN. Jakarta’s practice of abstaining in international forums often reflects efforts to maintain neutrality or a certain diplomatic position on global conflict issues.
This resolution was adopted coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, a conflict that has caused tens of thousands of casualties, millions of refugees, and massive infrastructure damage.
Although UN General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, their adoption demonstrates strong international diplomatic pressure for a ceasefire and peaceful resolution, as well as serving as a benchmark for countries’ positions on this major geopolitical issue.[]
