London, MINA – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party and head of the British government after facing mounting political pressure from within his party.
He will remain in office temporarily until his successor is elected in a leadership transition process expected to take place in the coming weeks, Al-Jazeera reported on Monday.
In a statement outside the official Downing Street residence, Starmer acknowledged that a majority of his party members no longer see him as the right person to lead the Labour Party into the next general election.
Nevertheless, he said he accepted the decision and committed to ensuring that the leadership transition process proceeds in an orderly and stable manner.

Starmer’s resignation comes less than two years after he led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election. However, his government’s popularity has declined sharply due to various policy controversies, slowing economic growth, and the Labour Party’s defeat in local elections held in May.
The local election results triggered a wave of criticism and demands for Starmer to step down.
Several names have begun to emerge as strong candidates to replace Starmer. Among the most prominent is Andy Burnham, a senior Labour Party figure and former Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham has expressed his readiness to run in the leadership contest and has promised an agenda of renewal.[]
