Washington, MINA – US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday establishing authorities to impose tariffs on nations that do business with Iran, but refrained from immediately implementing the penalties, Anadolu Agency reported.
The order was issued on the same day the US and Iran held nuclear talks for the first time in over six months. While it does not specify the tariff rates, it cites 25% as an “example.”
According to the order, duties “may be imposed on goods imported into the United States that are products of any country that directly or indirectly purchases, imports, or otherwise acquires any goods or services from Iran.”
It directs the secretaries of state and commerce to determine whether a foreign country engages in such trade with Iran after the order’s effective date. Once the commerce secretary identifies such activity, they are to inform the secretary of state with relevant findings.

Trump first announced the potential penalties last month in a social media post during mass demonstrations in Iran, amid accusations of severe rights abuses by Tehran to suppress the protests.
The order is scheduled to take effect early Saturday.[]
