Jakarta, MINA – Daniel Johan, a member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), described the situation in Kalimantan as half ‘hell’ due to forest and land fires that are becoming increasingly severe and widespread.

“Kalimantan is now like as half ‘hell’ because the forest and land fires are worsening. The government needs to designate the fires in Kalimantan as a national disaster, given their significant impact,” Daniel Johan said in a press statement on Friday (August 21).

He warned that the fires in Kalimantan have nearly paralyzed local activities and are adversely affecting public health and the economy.

As is known, forest and land fires across several regencies and cities in Kalimantan continue to spread, causing a range of problems. In addition to deteriorating air quality, the thick haze resulting from the fires has drastically reduced visibility in many areas.

In some regions, visibility has dropped to as low as 10 meters. Visibility is reported to be severely limited in particularly hard-hit areas such as Banjarbaru and South Kalimantan, disrupting daily activities as well as air and ground transportation. []
