Ramallah, MINA – Institutions specializing in prisoners’ affairs reported on Monday that the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons has surpassed 9,600 as of the beginning of April 2026, based on official data issued by the Israel Prison Service, according to the Palestine Information Center.

The figures came in a joint statement by the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS), the Addameer Association, and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs of the Palestine Liberation Organization. The statement noted that the number of Palestinian prisoners includes 84 women and approximately 350 children, held in Megiddo and Ofer prisons.

The number of administrative detainees who held without charge has reached about 3,532, the highest percentage compared to other categories of sentenced and detained prisoners, in addition to those classified as so-called “unlawful combatants.” The number of detainees under this classification has reached 1,251, though this figure does not include all detainees from the Gaza Strip held in camps run by the Israeli army.

The data also indicates that this classification includes Arab detainees from Lebanon and Syria, though their exact number was not specified. Human rights groups have warned of the consequences of the expanding use of such designations. The statement did not mention the classification of the remaining detainees, who are typically not placed under “administrative detention.”

Since October 2023, in conjunction with the genocide in Gaza, Israel has escalated its violations against Palestinian prisoners, who suffer torture, starvation, and medical neglect – conditions that have led to the deaths of dozens of detainees, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.[]
