Nine killed in US Strikes, Says Syria

Amman, 11 Rajab 1438/08 April 2017 (MINA) – At least nine civilians including four children died early on Friday when missiles fired by American forces in the Mediterranean crashed into residential areas in eastern countryside of the central town of Homs, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said.

SANA said two missiles crashed into an air base in the central region near Al-Shayrat village, killing five civilians including three children and inflicting heavy damage in houses.

One missile hit the nearby village of Al-Hamrat, killing four civilians including one children. Seven civilians were also wounded when another one crashed into the village of Al-Manzoul, 4 km from the air base.

The Syrian Army Command declared in a statement that at 3:42 a.m. (Syria local time), “the United States of America carried out a flagrant aggression targeting a base of the Syrian Army Air base in the central region with a salvo of missiles killing six military personnel and wounding a number of others as well as inflicting extensive damage.”

Meanwhile, Syrian Minister of Information Mohammad Tarjaman said the “American aggression on Syria accounts to support for terrorism and came after the huge losses suffered by the terrorists at the hands of the army and the Syrian armed forces.”

In a statement to the official Syrian Television, the minister described the arguments made by Washington to launch the attack as a charade, adding “this aggression will not prompt the Syrian Army to relinquish its duties in the war on terrorism.”

The US strikes came after “the victories scored by the army in its war on terrorism and making local conciliation in many regions and advancing on the political track.”

The Syrian Monitor for Human Rights said in a statement an unidentified warplane appeared in the skies over Khan Sheikhoun following the American attack and fired a single missile on a location close to a main road.

No casualties or damage were reported.

The monitor said seven officers of the Syrian Army died in the dawn American missile strike. (T/RS5/RS1)
