Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has strongly condemned a viral social media promotion that offered alcoholic drinks as a prize for memorizing Quranic verses, stating that such actions are unjustifiable from all perspectives.

MUI Fatwa Chairman Prof. KH Asrorun Niam Sholeh declared that the marketing gimmick combining holy verses with alcohol violated religious, moral, and legal norms.

“This action cannot be justified from religious, moral, ethical, or legal standpoints. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions,” he said on Monday.

The controversy erupted after a Threads account shared an experience at The Sound Project music festival, where a New Port alcohol brand booth challenged attendees to memorize Surah Ad-Duha in exchange for a bottle of alcoholic beverage.

Prof. Niam, a professor of Islamic jurisprudence at UIN Jakarta, explained that the Quran is the sacred word of God, and reciting it is a highly valuable act of worship. Alcohol, by contrast, is explicitly prohibited in the Quran.

“Creating a gimmick that uses Quran recitation as a condition to win alcoholic drinks is a degradation of the Quran’s sanctity,” he said.[]
