MORSI: ELECTIONS TO TAKE PLACE SOMETIME IN THREE TO FOUR MONTHS

Cairo, 13 Rabiul Awwal 1434/25 January 2013 (MINA) – President Mohamed Morsi said that the coming House of Representatives elections will be during the next 3-4 months.

The State Information Service (SIS) released a statement on Thursday quoting Morsy as saying during the meeting that the nation had made significant gains in political and democratic stability.

Established in 1954, the SIS is the country’s main information and public relations agency. Supervision of the SIS was transferred from the Ministry of Information to the president after a decree was issued in 2012.

During his meeting with Egyptian and Arab publishers after opening the 44th Cairo International Book Fair, Morsi has said a new legislation is needed to give more room for the freedom of publication and creativity, according to SIS reports received by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Friday.

“We’re still acting under the 1936 law,” Morsi said, stressing “amendments should be made to this law.”

“It should be a priority of the coming House of Representatives to pass laws that allow for freedom of publication and creativity”, he said.

The President liked the slogan of the Fair. “‘Dialogue not Clash’ is a good theme, though it could suggest that some kind of confrontation exists, which is not true.” According to Morsi, diversity makes Egypt stronger than ever before.

Morsi also touched upon Arab Spring Revolutions which reflected the peoples’ aspirations to change.

Libya, an Arab Spring country, is the guest of honor of the Fair. Morsi said: “It is a good choice because Libya has been through unprecedented oppression.”

Morsi said publishers play a key role in spreading knowledge. “You have big responsibility in this stage to document, collect and analyze information about the Revolution,” he said. “We want to document Revolutions of the peoples.” (T/R-022/R-006)
