Gaza, MINA – The Israeli occupation military is reportedly constructing a massive earthen barrier that cuts straight across the Gaza Strip, effectively splitting the territory in two. According to a recent analysis of satellite imagery, the project separates more than half of Gaza, now under Israeli control from the remaining areas still home to Palestinian civilians.

The development was first reported by the Associated Press (July 21, 2026), which analyzed satellite images from Planet Labs PBC. The images reveal a large-scale earthwork stretching from east to west across central Gaza. The structure is being built in an area that Israeli forces have controlled for months and is part of a broader military zone network that has expanded steadily since the war erupted following Hamas’s October 2023 attack. The barrier is said to cut off more than 50 percent of Gaza’s territory from other parts of the enclave where most Palestinian civilians still live.

Construction has moved quickly and in phases. Satellite images compared over recent weeks show extensive excavation, the creation of patrol roads, and massive piles of earth forming a continuous barrier. Analysts believe the structure is designed to serve as both a military security zone and a means to restrict civilian movement between different parts of Gaza.

The Israeli occupation military has yet to offer a detailed explanation of the project’s ultimate goal. However, Israeli officials have previously made it clear that maintaining control over certain parts of Gaza is essential to preventing Hamas from rebuilding its military capabilities. The government has repeatedly said its operations are aimed at destroying Hamas’s infrastructure and securing long-term safety for Israeli citizens.

But observers and international organizations are raising alarms. Mairav Zonszein, Director of the Israel-Palestine Program at the International Crisis Group, warned that building permanent infrastructure in occupied territory could reshape Gaza’s geopolitical reality for years to come.

“The more permanent infrastructure is built, the more questions arise about whether this is truly a temporary measure or part of a long-term plan to control the territory,” Zonszein told the Associated Press.

The barrier is going up as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to spiral downward. The United Nations and other international aid agencies have repeatedly warned that restricted access and widespread infrastructure damage have only made the food, health, and displacement crises worse.

Some Israeli military analysts see the earth wall as a tactical advantage, a new defensive line that makes it easier to monitor movement inside Gaza. But critics argue it could make post-war reconstruction even harder and reduce any chance of a lasting political settlement.

For now, it remains unclear whether the barrier is meant to be permanent or just a temporary military fixture. But satellite images show the project is expanding rapidly and has already become one of the most significant physical changes to Gaza since the war began, a stark sign of how deeply the enclave is being carved up.[]
