Gaza, MINA – Israel has, for the first time, acknowledged the killing of around 71,000 Palestinians during the Gaza genocide, after years of refusing to recognize reports issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on Thursday, the Israeli military stated that the reported death toll of approximately 71,000 is largely accurate, adding that the figure does not include those who remain missing or buried under the rubble.
Quoted by Quds News on Monday, the military said it is still analyzing the data, which also does not include those who died from starvation or diseases worsened by Israel’s years-long genocide in Gaza.
Despite acknowledging the accuracy of the figures, the military said it is attempting to distinguish between civilian and military deaths in the territory.

Data published by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on deaths and injuries in the Gaza Strip has been used since the start of the genocide by many international organizations, including UN agencies, governments, media outlets, and researchers, and there is broad consensus that the data is reliable.
Moreover, several studies have even suggested that the actual death toll in Gaza may be higher than the figures reported by the Ministry of Health.
In June 2025, a study was released concluding that by January of that year, around 75,200 Gaza residents had been killed during the genocide.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health this week, more than 71,660 Palestinians have been killed during the genocide in Gaza, while 171,340 others have been injured. []
