Tehran, MINA – Iranian state television announced on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed, declaring 40 days of public mourning across the country.
The broadcaster did not immediately provide further details about the circumstances of his death. The Supreme National Security Council stated that Khamenei was killed at his office on Saturday morning, adding that his death would mark the beginning of a “great uprising against the tyrants of the world.”
The announcement confirms earlier claims made by US President Donald Trump, who posted on his social media platform Truth Social that “Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also suggested there were indications the supreme leader had been killed in joint US-Israeli strikes.
The confirmation comes after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei had earlier insisted that Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian were “safe and sound,” highlighting the rapidly shifting information environment surrounding the conflict.

The death of Khamenei, who has held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989, marks a seismic shift in Iran’s political landscape and is likely to have profound implications for the country’s leadership, its nuclear program, and its regional posture.
The announcement of 40 days of mourning signals a period of national reflection and potential transition as Iran grapples with the loss of its top authority.
The confirmation also intensifies the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance, with potential for further escalation as both sides assess the strategic implications of the supreme leader’s death.[]
