New York, MINA – Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations on Thursday rejected claims that Tehran has closed the Strait of Hormuz as “baseless and absurd,” while asserting that the United States has “endangered maritime security” by sinking an Iranian frigate in international waters, Anadolu Agency reports.

“The claim that Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz is baseless and absurd,” the mission wrote on social media platform X, reaffirming that Iran “remains committed to international law and freedom of navigation.”

The statement revealed that the frigate Dena, which was visiting India as a naval guest with 130 sailors aboard, was struck and sunk “in international waters by a US submarine without warning,” nearly 2,000 miles from Iran’s shores, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 sailors.

“This reckless attack violates the fundamental principles of international law and freedom of navigation,” the mission said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Thursday that the attack occurred on Wednesday off the coast of Sri Lanka. The warship was returning home after participating in a naval drill off the Indian coast last month. A total of 32 sailors were wounded, with many others reported missing.

The attack on the Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean comes amid an ongoing military campaign by Israel and the United States against Iran that began on Saturday. The campaign has killed at least 926 victims, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and top military officials.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf countries that host US military assets. The rapidly escalating conflict has raised international concerns about broader regional instability and the potential for further maritime confrontations in strategic waterways.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, remains a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. Any disruption to shipping through the strait could have significant implications for world markets.[]
