Amman, MINA – Satellite imagery has confirmed that Iran successfully destroyed a key AN/TPY-2 radar system belonging to the United States’ Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) network at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, according to reports citing a US official, as quoted by Al Mayadeen.

The radar, manufactured by RTX Corporation and valued at approximately $300 million, plays a central role in directing THAAD missile interceptions.

Its destruction marks a significant blow to Washington’s missile defense infrastructure in West Asia. Data from US-based monitoring groups indicates that two Iranian strikes targeted sites in Jordan on February 28 and March 3, though initial reports had suggested the attacks were intercepted.

The AN/TPY-2 radar is critical for THAAD systems, which intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes beyond the reach of shorter-range defenses like Patriot batteries. With this radar out of service, missile interception responsibilities in the area will increasingly fall to Patriot systems, though stocks of PAC-3 interceptor missiles are reportedly under strain as the conflict intensifies.

This strike follows previous damage to an AN/FPS-132 early warning radar in Qatar, highlighting the increasing pressure on US and allied air defense networks facing waves of Iranian drones and ballistic missiles.

The broader US-Israeli war on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory operations have caused far-reaching disruption. According to Fortune, over 23,000 flights have been canceled globally since Iran’s first retaliatory strike, while internet access in Iran has been disrupted for six consecutive days.

Iran has also expanded its strategy into cyber and economic warfare. Reports indicate Iranian operations have targeted hyperscale data centers in West Asia operated by major technology companies like Amazon and Microsoft.

Energy infrastructure has become a focal point as well, with a reported Iranian missile strike on Bahrain’s only oil refinery sending shockwaves through energy markets and raising concerns about Gulf energy asset vulnerability.

Regional officials have warned of severe economic consequences. Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi cautioned that the war could “bring down the economies of the world” if Gulf energy exports are disrupted and oil prices surge to $150 per barrel.  []
