Indonesian Muslims to Perform Lunar Eclipse Prayer

Jakarta, MINA – The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has called on Muslims across the country to perform the Khusuf prayer, or Lunar Eclipse Prayer, coinciding with the Total Lunar Eclipse set to occur on Tuesday evening.

Director of Islamic Affairs and Sharia Development, Arsad Hidayat, explained that lunar eclipses are natural phenomena that serve as a reminder of the greatness of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. Therefore, Muslims in areas experiencing the eclipse are encouraged to perform the eclipse prayer as a form of worship and self-reflection.

The Ministry has also instructed its regional offices, religious leaders, scholars, Islamic community organization leaders, mosque imams, and local governments to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the Eclipse Prayer according to the eclipse timing in their respective regions.

Based on astronomical data, the Total Lunar Eclipse can be observed across all Indonesian territory at different times. Several regions in eastern Indonesia can observe the eclipse from its early phase, while central and western Indonesia can witness the eclipse from its peak phase until the end of the phenomenon.

This rare phenomenon occurs during the holy month of Ramadan, adding to the devotion of Muslims who are currently observing their fast.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs hopes that the lunar eclipse occurring during Ramadan can strengthen community solidarity and serve as a means for collective prayer for the safety of the nation and state. In addition to performing the sunnah eclipse prayer, Muslims are also encouraged to increase dhikr (remembrance of Allah), seek forgiveness, give charity, and offer supplications.

The Khusuf prayer is a highly recommended sunnah muakkad (emphasized sunnah) during lunar eclipses, serving as recognition of Allah’s greatness and fear of His power as reflected through these natural phenomena.[]
