A wide view of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. ..The meeting is held to mark the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, with UN officials and Heads of State and Government reflecting on the achievements of the past eight decades and the path ahead for a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system.

Berlin, MINA – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, arguing that the current structure of the global body must be adapted to a changing world order to remain effective in maintaining international peace and security, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.

In a speech in Berlin, Steinmeier said the UN is facing a major test amid rising armed conflicts, geopolitical rivalries, and declining trust in multilateral institutions. He stressed that reform is essential for the organization to carry out its mandate more effectively.

The German president also highlighted the need to update decision-making mechanisms within the UN, including adjusting the composition of its main bodies to reflect current geopolitical realities. He emphasized that the post-World War II system no longer fully represents the balance of global power in the 21st century.

His call comes as growing demands from various countries push for reform of the UN Security Council. Nations including Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil have long advocated for expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership to ensure more proportional representation for regions such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia. However, the reform process has so far been stalled by differing views among member states.

Earlier this month, during a state visit to Indonesia, Steinmeier and President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed the importance of upholding the UN Charter as the foundation for resolving international conflicts, agreeing that international law and multilateral cooperation must remain the basis for addressing global crises.

The push for UN reform has gained renewed urgency as the organization has been criticized for failing to respond effectively to ongoing conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Many observers argue that updating the UN’s structure and working mechanisms is a pressing necessity to ensure the body remains relevant in safeguarding global stability and peace in the future.[]
