Beirut, MINA – The latest round of US economic sanctions against Iran has been met with skepticism by former CIA analyst Larry Johnson.
He believes the measures have lost their bite and fail to account for the shift in Iran’s economic partnerships away from the dollar-based system.
Speaking on the Al Mayadeen program ‘The Great Standoff: Iran and the World’ on Tuesday, former CIA analyst Larry Johnson likened the highly anticipated US announcement to “a mouse that roars”—essentially a very weak threat.
He stated that the sanctions are “based on outdated assumptions,” including the notion that Iran remains “tethered to the petrodollar system” and “the US banking system.”

Johnson noted that the lead-up to the announcement was marked by excessive hype. He likened public expectations to “people lining up to witness a volcanic eruption, hoping to see a repeat of the Krakatoa eruption from over a century ago.” []
