Jerusalem, MINA – Warnings were escalating over plans by extremist Temple Mount groups to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque, coinciding with Israel’s so-called “Jerusalem Occupation Day.”
According to the Palestine Information Center, on Monday, Jerusalem researcher Ziyad Ibhais said the danger is that this date falls on a Friday, when settler incursions are normally banned. Breaking this rule would be a dangerous shift.
Ibhais said the groups have three goals. First, to force an incursion on Friday morning. Second, if that fails, to force an incursion after Friday prayers, which has never happened since 1967. Third, to eventually storm the Dome of the Rock and Qibli Mosque.
He said 13 Israeli politicians, including three ministers, have demanded police allow the incursion. The groups have also started a petition to raise the Israeli flag inside Al-Aqsa.

Ibhais called on Palestinians to increase their presence at the mosque starting Thursday afternoon to protect it. He said Israeli police have not announced a clear position yet because they are concerned about Palestinian mobilization.
He added that these events coincide with the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, making Al-Aqsa a symbol of Palestinian identity and the right of return.[]
