Bandar Abbas, MINA – At least five people were killed in two separate explosions that occurred in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas and in the city of Ahvaz near the Iraqi border on Saturday.

According to the head of the Bandar Abbas Fire Department, an explosion caused by a gas leak killed one person and injured 14 others, The New Arab reported.

“The preliminary cause of the building incident in Bandar Abbas was a gas leak and accumulation, which led to the explosion. This is the initial theory,” said Mohammad Amin Lyaghat in comments broadcast on state television.

The semi-official Tasnim News Agency said that social media reports claiming a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy was targeted in the explosion were “completely false.”

Iranian media said the explosion is under investigation but did not provide further details.

Bandar Abbas, home to Iran’s most important container port, is located on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway between Iran and Oman that handles about one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil trade.

Separately, four people were killed in a gas explosion in the city of Ahvaz near the Iraqi border, according to the government-run Tehran Times. No further information was immediately available.[]
