EGYPTIAN AUTHORITIES CLOSE RAFAH BORDER CROSSING

Rafah, 5 Dhulqa’dah 1434/12 September 2013 (MINA) – The Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah border crossing on Wednesday morning for “security reasons”.

Maher Abu Sabha, director of the general department of crossings in the interior ministry, said that the Egyptian authorities attributed the closure to events in the Egyptian border city of Rafah.

He asked citizens to follow up the interior ministry’s website to know whether the crossing would be open on Thursday; at the event of which those registering for travel on Wednesday would have priority of travel on Thursday.

A powerful explosion had blasted the Egyptian military intelligence premises in Rafah earlier on Wednesday inflicting casualties. Palestine-info media reported monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA).

Palestinians complaining by not given access to cross the border, especially after the destruction of the tunnels by the Egyptian military that led crisis to the supply needs of the area that has blockaded by Israel since 2007.

Therefore, the crisis is getting worse each day, where previously the center of Human Rights called on the international community to help the area which has about eight million people living on it.

One of  Palestinian Abu Hamdi Gazans complained about Authority’s restrictions on the border. “The authorities only allow people who have foreign passports and foreigners to cross the border, while we (palestinian) were not allowed through,” Hamdi told MINA (Mi’raj News Agency).(T/P03/P04)
