BLAST HITS TRAM STATION IN EGYPTIAN CAPITAL, INJURES ONE

Cairo, 8 Jumadil Awal 1435/9 March 2014 (MINA) – At least one person has been injured after a bomb explosion targeted a tram station in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, security sources say.

Egyptian security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a suspected homemade bomb went off near a tram station in eastern Cairo on Saturday morning. A worker was hurt because of the blast.

According to the security officials, a second similar bomb also detonated at the same station. Egyptian police are searching the area for more explosive devices, Press TV quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

On February 4, two bombs exploded near the police officers who were patrolling a bridge in the Egyptian capital, wounding six policemen.

In a similar incident on January 24, Cairo was struck with four bombings which targeted military institutions and killed six people.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since the country’s first democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsi was ousted on July 3, 2013. Hundreds have lost their lives in the ensuing violence across the North African country.

Human rights groups say as many as 1,400 people have been killed in the political violence that erupted last July.

Since Morsi’s removal, militants have stepped up deadly attacks against the Egyptian security personnel, killing many soldiers and police officers. (T/E01/IR)
