Minneapolis, MINA – At least 29 people were arrested on Friday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during protests against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The demonstrations were a response to the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good, who was shot and killed by ICE officers in Minneapolis earlier in the week following increased immigration raids in the state under the Trump Administration.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, the arrests occurred after protesters gathered at a downtown hotel rumored to be housing ICE agents. Police issued multiple warnings and declared the gathering an unlawful assembly before moving to disperse the crowd. Chief O’Hara reported that one police officer was injured after a chunk of ice was thrown at officers.
In a related development, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar stated she was blocked by federal agents from entering an ICE detention center near Minneapolis on Saturday to conduct congressional oversight. After initially being allowed entry, she and two other congresswomen were ordered to leave the building. Omar condemned the action as “a blatant attempt to obstruct members of Congress from doing their oversight duties.”
The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced they are opening a joint investigation to collect evidence regarding the killing of Renee Nicole Good.[]
