Arab League Demands UNSC to Stop New Settlements in Jerusalem

U.N. says Israel’s new settlement plans in East Jerusalem are “unacceptable”.

Cairo, 26 Rabiul Akhir 1438/25 January 2017 (MINA) – The Arab League demanded UN Security Council (UNSC) Tuesday to bear its responsibilities and counter Israeli authorities’ recent announcement to build 566 housing units in occupied East Jerusalem.

It is part of the Israeli occupation’s plan to expand its settlement goals and Judaize Jerusalem, the League said in a statement

The Israelis took this step directly after Donald Trump sworn in as the US President and made a pledge to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the League added.

The new settlement action also contradicts with UNSC’s recent resolution (2334) which states that Israeli settlement activities constitute a “flagrant violation” of international law, and have “no legal validity,” demanding Israeli authorities to stop such activities and fulfill their obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention, said the statement.

The League also said the Israeli expansionist plan to the occupation’s settlement policies and plans, a flagrant challenge to the international community’s well, and continuous violation to the international law and legitimacy. (T/RS05/RS01)
