Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has declared the recurring forest and land fires in several Indonesian provinces an emergency and urged the government to take firm action to address the disaster.

In Tausiyah No. Kep-112/DP-MUI/X/2026, MUI reaffirmed its Fatwa No. 30 of 2016, which declares the careless burning of forests and land that damages the environment and endangers human life haram, or forbidden under Islamic law.

MUI said the current situation had reached an emergency level because of its serious consequences for public health, the economy, and the environment. Smoke from the fires has also spread across national borders, affecting neighboring Malaysia and Singapore.

The council called on Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to give greater attention to the crisis until the forest and land fires are fully addressed.

MUI also urged the central and regional governments, the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and volunteers to strengthen coordination and mobilize all available resources to accelerate firefighting operations.

The council called on law enforcement agencies to take firm and fair action without discrimination against individuals and corporations that deliberately burn land for commercial purposes.

According to MUI, activities that cause environmental destruction conflict with the fundamental objectives of Islamic law, which include protecting the environment and safeguarding human life.

Alongside emergency response and law enforcement, MUI encouraged Muslims to undertake spiritual efforts by performing the congregational Istisqa prayer to ask Allah for rain, increasing istighfar, engaging in sincere repentance, and reciting Qunut Nazilah during obligatory prayers.

The council also urged residents in affected areas to wear masks, stay away from hazardous locations, and avoid burning rubbish carelessly.

Forest and land fires recur in Indonesia, particularly during the dry season. The resulting haze can cause respiratory problems, disrupt daily activities and transportation, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

The recurring crisis has prompted calls for stronger prevention measures, improved land management, and more effective enforcement against those responsible for illegal burning. MUI’s appeal combines practical measures to address the disaster with religious guidance, emphasizing that firefighting, accountability, public health protection, and spiritual efforts should go hand in hand.[]
