11 Countries Summon Israeli Ambassadors, Condemn Ben-Gvir’s Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists

London, MINA – Eleven countries, including eight European nations, summoned Israeli ambassadors and representatives for reprimand over a video showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir overseeing the mistreatment of detained activists from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, according to Anadolu Agency.

Ben-Gvir posted the video on social media showing himself taunting pro-Palestinian activists who were zip-tied and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in international waters.

The United Kingdom summoned the Israeli chargé d’affaires over Ben-Gvir’s “inflammatory video,” with the Foreign Office “strongly” condemning the conduct as a violation of “the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people.”

Italy summoned Israel’s ambassador to protest the treatment of activists and demanded the release of its nationals still being held. Poland said it would summon Israel’s chargé d’affaires to demand an apology. Spain summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires after Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares condemned the “monstrous, inhumane, and disgraceful” treatment.

France summoned the Israeli ambassador to express its “indignation,” while Belgium summoned the ambassador over Ben-Gvir’s “deeply disturbing” and “unacceptable” treatment. The Netherlands and Portugal also summoned Israeli envoys over the incident.

New Zealand announced it would summon the Israeli ambassador, having already imposed a travel ban on Ben-Gvir last year. Australia summoned Israel’s ambassador to reinforce the government’s displeasure. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced Israel’s “abominable” treatment of activists, demanding assurances for Canadians’ safety.[]
