Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) is urging the government to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP), stating that the forum is not pro-Palestine.

Deputy Chairman of MUI Cholil Nafis criticized Indonesia’s membership in the BoP, calling it an inappropriate action and urging President Prabowo Subianto to immediately withdraw.

Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace clearly does not side with Palestine,” he stated via his personal X account on Thursday.

He further emphasized that one of the forum’s members is Israel, a state that is colonizing Palestinian land. He also questioned Indonesia’s obligation to pay membership fees.

“Oddly enough, Indonesia is still required to pay membership fees. It would be better for Mr. Prabowo to just withdraw,” he added.

Similar criticism was expressed by the Head of MUI’s Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim. He views the Board of Peace as a concrete form of neocolonialism.

He explained that the Palestinian issue is not merely a conflict but involves colonization and the deprivation of basic rights and livelihood for Palestinians.

MUI asserts that the Palestinian issue is not just an ordinary conflict, but a matter of colonization, deprivation of fundamental rights, and systematic crimes and violations of international humanitarian law,” he said.

He believes the Board of Peace is not based on justice and Palestine would remain colonized by Israel.

Sudarnoto worries this move would shift the focus from justice and independence to mere conflict management and regional stability. He emphasized that any form of colonization must be ended immediately.

“True peace can only be realized when the rights, dignity, and sovereignty of the Palestinian people are fully restored. The Board of Peace scheme does not indicate a direction towards true peace,” he concluded.[]
