Oregon, MINA – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation,IINA reported, citing the announcement of the opening of a new chapter in Oregon.

The new CAIR chapter joins more than 30 regional offices and chapters of the civil rights organisation, whose headquarters is at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.

By the beginning of October, the chapter in association with several other groups, will launch a hate crime reform platform on their website (cairoregon.org) that local and state governments can adopt.

In the wake of the Portland MAX stabbings, the chapter supported victims of the tragedy and had provided ongoing support to those families. CAIR-Oregon also continues to support hate crime victims in other cases.

CAIR-Oregon has been active in assisting victims of hate crimes across the state.

The chapter also has been active in community organizing through the Portland Stands United Against Hate (PSUAH) coalition, which has held several anti-hate rallies and events.

In addition, CAIR-Oregon has been active in engaging in conversations with community organisations, police departments and government officials across the state to enact comprehensive hate crime reforms. Community members interested in starting a CAIR office in their state are invited to participate in a webinar to learn more about the process involved in forming a new chapter.

Earlier this year, CAIR announced the addition of new chapters and offices in Colorado, Kentucky and Austin, Texas. CAIR also announced that it is opening a new satellite office in West Virginia.

Satellite offices are an extension of CAIR’s national headquarters and seek to increase its presence at the grassroots level.

CAIR’S mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. (T/RS5/RS1)
