WHO Calls Humanitarian Corridors to Evacuate Sick and Wounded from Eastern Aleppo

Geneva, 26 Dzulhijjah 1437/28 September 2016 (MINA) – As the escalation of fighting in Aleppo claims more victims every day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for an immediate establishment of humanitarian routes to evacuate sick and wounded from the eastern part of the city.

“Over the last week-end alone, more than 200 people were injured and taken to understaffed health facilities in east Aleppo. Only about 35 doctors remain inside east Aleppo City to care for an overwhelming number of wounded patients,” WAM quoted WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib as saying at a news briefing on Tuesday.

All access routes to east Aleppo, she added, are closed leaving no options for the civilian population to leave the besieged area.

The remaining 25 health facilities in east Aleppo City are on the verge of complete destruction, including seven hospitals that are fully or only partly functioning.

“In Syria, WHO and other health partners continue to deliver aid to people in besieged and hard-to-reach areas. On 24-25 September, WHO delivered medicines and medical supplies sufficient to treat 123 000 people to Al-Waer in Homs, Zabadani and Madaya in Rural Damascus, and Foua and Kufraya in Idlib governate.”

“Supplies included standard health kits which contain supplies to treat 10 000 people for 3 months,” she concluded. (T/R07/R01)
