UN to Reconvene Cyprus Conference in Geneva on June 28

New York, 15 Ramdan `438/10 June 2017 (MINA) – The United Nations confirmed on Friday that a conference on Cyprus will reconvene at the political level under the auspices of the Secretary General in Geneva on June 28, KUNA reported.

The announcement came in line with the latest agreement between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Mustafa Akinci that the leaders need to reconvene the Conference on Cyprus.

Therefore, all agreed that the chapter on security and guarantees is of vital importance to the two communities.

The three officials agreed that progress in this chapter is an essential element in reaching an overall agreement and in building trust between the two communities in relation to their future security.

Therefore, in a statement released Friday, the UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the Conference on Cyprus will reconvene at the political level under the auspices of the Secretary General, with the participation of Anastasiades and Akinci, as well as Greece, Turkey and the UK as guarantor powers, and in the presence of the European Union as an observer.
