UN Determined to End Hunger – Report

Achieving food security is the second goal in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) signed by world leaders in 2015.

Beirut, 4 Ramadan 1438/30 May 2017 (MINA) – Achieving food security is the second goal in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) signed by world leaders in 2015, KUNA reported, citing the UN Information Center in Beirut.

There are hundreds of millions of people around the world facing the dangers of hunger. Thus, creating sustainable agriculture is a priority for the UN to achieve food security, said the center in a report on Monday.

Meanwhile, the center noted that there are currently 850 million hungry people, expected to reach two billions by 2050.

It added that malnutrition also leads to the death of about 45 percent of children below five years of age.

The food crisis could worsen due to the impact of climate change and natural disasters on soil, fresh water sources, oceans and forests, the report said.

The fact that agricultural lands lost 75 percent of their product diversity since the beginning of the 20th century also played a role in the crisis.

The report affirmed that countries should boost the production and income of small investors and invest in agriculture and rural development.

It noted that countries must also provide all people equally with food that follows safety measures.
