NEW RESTAURANT OFFERS HALAL CUISINE

New York, 9 Rabi’ul Akhir 1436/30 January 2014 (MINA) – Sohaib Ahmad opened the doors of New York Eats to Arlington on Jan. 1, offering residents New York-inspired street car food with emphasis on Halal.

Halal, permissible cuisine to Muslims, restricts the consumption of pork, blood and alcohol. It also requires animals to be slaughtered in a specific way.

“I thought it would be a good idea to bring the concept over to Arlington. It was big in New York, and this was an opportunity to bring it over here and start a business,” Ahmad said, theshorthorn quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

Ahmad describes the menu as a little bit of Mediterranean, some Afghani and American. The restaurant also offers sandwiches, burgers, wraps and rice platters with chicken, gyro or falafel.

Undeclared sophomore Cory Smith stopped in during his lunch hour from a nearby bookstore.

“The atmosphere was very chill and the restaurant is small,” Smith said “I saw it open up close to my work, and I thought I would check it out.”

Architecture sophomore Sadie Rehman decided to stop there for lunch with her friend in between classes.

“It caters to a multitude of people. The service is quick and the food is good,” Rehman said. “It’s also convenient that it’s across the street from the campus.”

Although Ahmad isn’t offering discounts for students, he thinks the prices will do just fine around campus.

“We priced our food choices with the mindset that students are going to be our main customers,” Ahmad said. “The food is high quality, it is fresh and it is cheap.”(T/P009/P3)
