Jakarta, 13 Rabiul Awwal 1436/4 January 2015 (MINA)– Observing the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad on Friday (2/1), President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called on Muslims in Indonesia to follow the example of the prophet and enhance the sense of brotherhood among interfaith communities.

“The prophet taught us to love one another regardless of religious background because in Indonesia we have Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and others,” the President said at the National Monument (Monas) square on Saturday (3/1), Antara News quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

President Jokowi remarked that if Muslims in Indonesia follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, there will be no inter-village clashes or fights and brawls among the youth.

“The prophet did not teach the youth to indulge in inter-village fights and brawls,” the President said, adding that the prophet, during his lifetime, was steadfast in facing challenges, trials and insults.

Jokowi also noted that the prophet repaid insults and scorn with prayers and good deeds.

The head of state said it is not easy to follow the example of the prophet, but with continuous patience and consciousness, Muslims will be able to do so.

He asserted that by following the example of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, Indonesia can become a developed and prosperous nation. (T/P010/P3)
