Malaysian Opposition Holds 812 Peaceful Action

Kuala Lumpur, MINA – Malaysian opposition held a 812 (December 8 th) peaceful protest on Saturday to celebrate the government’s canceletation of ratification convention. Interestingly, this action came a week after 212 (December 2 nd) Reunion in Indonesia.

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, President of the UMNO Party who led the opposition Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, invited all levels of society to participate in the celebration of the cancellation of the ratification of the InternationalConvention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Launching from Free Malaysia Today, the parade was organized by the Ummah Defenders Movement (Ummah) and supported by UNO and PAS, that originally intended too ppose the ratification of the Convention.

The former Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, joined in the action held on the Dataran Merdeka.

Most Malaysian Muslim reject ICERD for the fear that they can impact their privileges as indigenous people.

The government finally decided to cancel the ICERD ratification through a statement released by the office of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 23 November.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad cynically thanked to participants who attended the thanks giving assembly for the royal decision to reject the ratification ofICERD.

“Today’s meeting was attended by one million people and I thank them because they gathered for gratitude.

“One million people, thank you,” he said, smiling sarcastically and adding he was grateful for the good decisions he made. (T/Sj/P2)
