Indonesia Raises Palestinian Issues at 18th NAM Summit

Baku, MINA – In the 18th Non-Aligned Movement Summit (NAM Summit) at Baku Congress Center, Baku, Azerbaijan, the Indonesian delegation rose up Palestinian issue.

For Indonesia, the issue of Palestinian independence has been a priority during Indonesia’s tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

“It is important for NAM member countries to support the role of Palestine in various international organizations including Palestinian leadership in the G77 this year,” Indonesian Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Husnan Bey Fananie said on Saturday, October 26.

The NAM Summit meeting was attended by 21 heads of state and heads of government, as well as 49 officials at the ministerial and parliamentary level as well as delegations from more than 121 member countries, NAM observers and visiting countries.

In addition to Palestine, the heads of state discussed the main issues of relevance and respect for the Dasasila Bandung, poverty alleviation, climate change, cybersecurity, combating terrorism, and efforts to fight unilateralism.

The meeting agreed on a number of main output documents, namely the NAM Final Document, the Raw Declaration, and the NAM Political Declaration on the Palestinian issue.

The Summit also held minutes of silence to commemorate the leaders of NAM member countries who had passed away, including the 3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia, B.J. Habibie.

NAM is an international organization consisting of 120 countries and aims to guarantee international peace and the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of its member states.

Indonesia is one of the founders of NAM and hosted the Asian-African Conference in 1955 which gave birth to Dasasila Bandung as a forerunner to the establishment of NAM in 1961. (T/Sj/P2)
