Ankara, 12 Rajab 1436/1 May 2015 (MINA) –Going on strike is a main defence tool for maintaining the economic and social rights of workers, the Egyptian Doctors’ Syndicate said yesterday, calling on people to challenge an Egyptian court ruling criminalising civil action.

In a statement it issued, the Syndicate stressed on the constitutional right of doctors and all other sectors to carry out peaceful strikes, noting this is part of article 15 of the Constitution.

“The right to carry out a strike is one of the basic rights of the human, which Egypt is committed to as part of its commitment to several international agreements,” the statement said.

“It is the most important means of defence for workers when facing oppressive working circumstances.” Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

An Egyptian court criminalised strikes, claiming they oppose the teachings of Islam.

However, the Doctors’ Syndicate challenged the ruling saying this was not the case. They stressed that going on strike is a basic human right guaranteed by Sharia.

Democracy Index said that Egypt witnessed 1,353 protests against the country’s economic situation during the first three months of this year. The healthcare sector carried out 35 protests in the same period, Democracy Index revealed. (T/P002/R03)
